Qashqai Persian Rugs - Rug Guide

Qashqai rugs represent a vibrant tapestry of nomadic life, handcrafted by the Qashqai tribe, one of the largest nomadic tribes of Turkic origin in central Iran. This tribe still practices a semi-nomadic lifestyle, making an arduous twice-yearly migration of about 800 kilometres with their families, livestock, and belongings.

Weaving carpets is an integral part of Qashqai's daily life. Unlike some other rug traditions, Qashqai rug designs are not pre-determined on paper. Instead, the Qashqai people draw their artistic inspiration from their immediate surroundings, resulting in a fascinating variety of spontaneous and individualistic designs.

Typically, Qashqai rugs are woven using wool in the warp, weft, and pile, most of which is sheared by the weavers themselves. They also often dye the wool locally. This traditional practice results in a unique effect known as 'abrash,' characterised by various and irregular shades of one colour on the rug's pile. This irregularity adds a distinctive charm to the rugs, symbolising the authentic and organic nature of Qashqai craftsmanship.
