Mashad Persian Rugs - Rug Guide
Mashad rugs originate from Mashad, a major city in northeastern Iran, revered as a holy city with the shrine of the 9th Shia saint, Imam Reza. Nestled in the Khorasan region, a place steeped in history and ravaged by historical invasions by Mongols like Genghis Khan and Timur Lang, Mashad's carpet making tradition is extensive and rich.
The rugs typically feature large designs, predominantly showcasing medallions or intricate all-over patterns. The colour palette leans heavily on deep, ruby reds, but also includes beige and khaki, reflecting the natural dyes commonly used in the region. Woven primarily from soft, silky wool on a cotton foundation, the carpets carry a distinctive, plush feel.
Mashad rugs employ a unique weaving method known as "Jofti" knots, different from the more familiar Persian or Turkish knots. This weave contributes to their special character and sets them apart in the realm of Persian rugs.
Among the Mashad rugs, some are finer and carry the signature of master weavers like Ghazi, Makhmalbaf, Amoghli, and Saber. These pieces may include silk details on the edges or in the foundation and were often bought by the Persian Royal and aristocratic families for their palaces and large residences.
In essence, Mashad rugs epitomise traditional Persian floral rugs in their design and colour schemes and are prized as highly decorative pieces suitable for opulent, traditional interiors.
